Covid-19 Community Food Response

Dewsbury Community Outreach aims to help the homeless and vulnerable members of our society by providing practical, emotional and spiritual support. During the Covid pandemic many of the organisations that have historically provided hot food for the homeless and vulnerable in Dewsbury have temporarily closed and we have teamed up with Sensory World and One Community Foundation to keep a meals service operating. All of our meals are provided free of charge to the recipients and we are dependent upon grant funding, donations from individuals and the support of local businesses to achieve this. We have been grateful for the assistance of Tesco, through Fareshare, in providing surplus food either to distribute directly to those in need or to use in our cooked meals.

Many of the people attending the project are in receipt of food parcels that require them to prepare and cook their own meals; it has become clear to us that most of them are incapable of successfully achieving this objective. One Community Foundation have recently awarded us a grant to purchase two freezers. This will allow us to prepare meals on a bulk basis and then freeze and distribute them as required for microwaving at home by the recipient. We would be grateful for any financial or food support that partner agencies may be able to provide to help us keep this service operating.

On Alternate weeks the Sunday meal is provided by Magic Wishing Well with the Sensory World/DCO team covering the other weeks.
